Madison's annual Food For Thought Festival is a fun and festive forum for offered free to Dane County eaters to learn about and celebrate the many opportunities they have to eat more pleasurably, knowledgeably, responsibly, and sustainably. The theme of this year's festival is 'Food and Art.' Our prize-winning keynoters are novelist Ruth Ozeki and chef and cookbook author Rick Bayless of Chicago's Frontera Grill.

A talk by Starhawk, the author of several books linking an earth-based spirituality to actions to change the world. A feminist and peace activist, she is one of the foremost voices of eco-feminism, and travels widely in North America and Europe giving lectures and workshops. Permaculture is the study of these core relationships and how humans and other beings can exist in harmony and abundantly with each other.

Want to be part of a study group? Organize work parties? Work with youth and schools to promote sustainable living curricula? Learn more about design? Do you have space for Permaculture projects or workshops on your property, or in the urban community? Come to learn, teach, explore what you know or want to learn about Permaculture Design.

Please bring yourself with your ideas, interest, intention, as well as any designs, photos, project experiences to share.

There will be a short informational presentation on Permaculture, but for the most part, the meeting will be a mind storm, to throw out ideas for all the possibilities that the Permaculture Guild can be, and what people want to get out of it.

Professor Orr is perhaps best known for his pioneering work on environmental literacy in higher education and his recent work in ecological design. He raised funds for and spearheaded the effort to design and build a $7.2 million Environmental Studies Center at Oberlin College, http://www.oberlin.edu/envs/ajlc/ ...not just a place for classes but rather a building that would help to redefine the relationship between humankind and the environment. "Is it possible to design buildings so well and so carefully that they do not cast a long ecological shadow over the future that our students will inherit? Earth Charter

The Community Summits are the preeminent event in the U.S. focusing on the Earth Charter. The first summit was held in 2001 and brought together 12 cities. This year some 30 cities worldwide, including Madison, will join together on October 11, 2003, for a full day of events intended to celebrate the Earth Charter, build new alliances among groups and individuals, and galvanize action to implement the Charter. A unique feature of the summits is that they are both local and international events. Participants have the opportunity to be connected by an internet web-cast that will enable them to share speakers and deepen their sense of connection and mutual purpose. Moreover, the summits will lay the groundwork for other initiatives around the nation that seek to bring the Earth Charter alive.

Fourteen individuals from the United States and Australia recently gathered in Sweden to participate in the 2004 Sustainable Sweden Tour. Tour participants visited three communities -- Stockholm (pop. 2 million), Umea (pop. 100,000), and Robertsfor (pop. 7,200) -- to meet community leaders, politicians, business owners, farmers, teachers and others to learn more about Sweden's road to sustainability. Three local community members who participated in the tour invite you to a gathering on Monday, September 13th to hear about their experiences from the 2004 Sustainable Sweden Tour and discuss implications and opportunities for the Madison/Dane County area. Included will be a slideshow of some of the best examples of sustainability from Sweden.

Stop by the Wil-Mar Center for a yummy breakfast of pancakes co-hosted by Sustain Dane and Madison Hours Cooperative. The cost for a pancake breakfast is $7.50 per person. The pancakes are organic and vegan and you can get 'em plain or with nuts and/or fruits. There will also be oven-roasted potatoes, organic fair trade coffee, orange juice, and live music. This is part of Madison Hours monthly pancake feed, and money raised during the breakfast will go to support Sustain Dane and Madison Hours Cooperative (so please invite friends and family as well!)

Environmental leaders from Freiburg, Germany , Dr. Dieter Woerner, Director of Freiburg's Environmental Department, and Andreas Hildebrandt of Verkehrs-AG presented environmental policies from their communities. The presentation was followed by a concert by the Freiburg Rathaus Band, a 20 piece brass band.

Sept

Over 110 community members attended The Next Natural Step hosted by Sustain Dane. Preceding the presentations was a potluck with a delicious array of local food. The event focused mainly on opportunities for community members to hear more about the efforts of the various Sustainability Action Teams and how they can get involved in their efforts.

Sept

The First United Methodist Church and Sustain Dane co-hosted the first ever Give Away, Take Away Day. The event enabled congregation members and others in the community to share in the experience of shedding unnecessary, unused, unwanted, or distracting “stuff”, while helping others who needed assistance to acquire useful items for free.
