Being on the Team

Hello! I have been posting on the Live Forward Blog for a few months now, but none of them have been about myself, so I figured I’d mix things up and fill everyone in on my experience thus far. As a senior studying Business Management at Edgewood College, I came to Sustain Dane wanting to gain some additional professional experience during my last two semesters of being a student. Now, I have been at Sustain Dane for 4 months, and my position as the Sustainable Business Network Outreach Intern has been a great fit for my major and my additional studies in environmental sustainability.
I have had the opportunity to learn from everyone who works here including volunteers and other interns. This experience has also given me the opportunity to participate in local events including Sustain Dane’s Badger Bioneers conference and Renew Wisconsin’s Energy Policy Summit. My overall goal for this internship is to connect with the SBN members and help everyone take advantage of the benefits of their membership. So far, I have helped prepare for the quarterly SBN meetings, done outreach to members, and experienced the day-to-day operations at Sustain Dane.
Specifically, over the past few months, I have been collecting stories from SBN members about what projects their business is working on related to sustainability. I have been so impressed by the results of this project! Learning about environmental issues can be disheartening; I’ve had this feeling many times in classes when we watch videos of the ice caps melting, or debate the politics behind the issues. It has been refreshing to hear that although all of our members are busy, they have taken the impetus for change and ran with it! Check out our most recent story about H&H Energy Services. I look forward to sharing more of these stories in the coming months.
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned so far is how important it is to have a connection between environmental and economic sustainability as well as equity. Sustain Dane has been a great environment for me to practice communication skills and learn from an inspiring team. I’m grateful and excited to continue on as an intern with Sustain Dane through May 2016. Thanks to everyone who has helped to make this a positive experience for me and I look forward to the coming months!
