Happy House Hunting

For all my adult life, I have been a happy renter. But, after living in Madison for the past year and a half, my husband and I decided to start looking for a house to buy, to really take root here. While some people may choose a house based on color or school district, we discovered that one of the most important questions to articulate about where to live should also answer how we will live.

I have come to realize that in choosing a house I am choosing my options for living sustainably. We are evaluating places in terms of their walkability, proximity to bus lines and bike paths, energy efficiency, options for day lighting, indoor space (enough, but not too much), outdoor space (enough to bbq and grow a small garden), proximity to nature, and neighborhood vitality.

So far, we have been unable to find a place that meets those requirements.

When all of those things are important to us, how do we choose which to live without? I don't know.

And so we continue looking.
