Let’s ban plastic bags!

San Francisco already has passed an ordinance. Portland joined the ranks last week and now Austin is considering banning plastic bags. (China also has a major, restrictive policy on single-use plastic bags.)
The problem is multi-fold: Plastic bags use major amounts of oil in production, and create huge amounts of waste—and we use them, well, like they are going out of style. On average, Americans use 444 plastic bags each year! That mean, Madisonians alone use 100 million plastic bags each year! Yeah, that’s quite a mountain—or enough to fill Lake Monona.

Madison has a recylcing program, but can't we go further?
